Waukegan Harbor

[About Waukegan and the Harbor]

Waukegan has become a center for recreation seekers throughout the Midwest. Waukegan Harbor has been refered to as the freshwater salmon capital of the world. The harbor now has over 50 charter boats and a few piers for fishing. Lake Michigan salmon, trout and perch may be caught at Waukegan Harbor. The boating season runs from April 1st to November 1st.

Waukegan Harbor is only minutes from Six Flags Great America which offers a wide variety of fun for the entire family. Near by Gurnee Mills Shopping Mall also offers a real shopping treat for the entire family.

Waukegan, visited by Pere Marquette in 1673, is one of the oldest communities in Illinois. The city started as a French trading post and Potawatomi Indian settlement known as "Little Fort". Records dating back to 1829 tell of a treaty signed by the Potawatomis in which they ceded all of their land in this area to the Federal Government.

Lake Michigan is one of the five Great Lakes of North America, and the only one located entirely within the United States. Lake Michigan is home to a variety of species of fish. It was originally home to lake trout, yellow perch, panfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, carp, bowfin, as well as some species of catfish. Later on Coho and chinook salmon were introduced as a predator of alewives to decrease the alewife population. Lake Michigan is now being stocked with several species of fish.
